first on 13... decision day has arrived for republicans in nevada this morning. the caucuses get underway there today... just hours after the candidates wrapped a final late night push to win the state. presidential candidate :00-:06"the men and women in this room have a national bully pulpit." presidential candidate :09-:12"this guy is sick, there's something wrong with this guy." today's vote will be the republicans' first big test in a state with a heavy latino population. the latest polls show donald trump with a 16 point lead over ted cruz. meanwhile, john kasich heads into the vote with backlash brewing back home. he's seeing protests after signing off to defund planned parenthood in ohio. kasich says the attacks show someone is listening.

carolina, but is vowing to keep his campaign going. meanwhile, the democrats are busy ramping up for a weekend vote. voters decide between hillary clinton and bernie sanders saturday in south carolina. clinton comes in with two wins -- iowa and nevada. sanders, just one -- the new hampshire primaries. today state senators are fighting to prove there's no going back on an expensive mistake. in 2014, the iowa workforce development mistakenly paid nearly three quarters of a million dollars in unemployment checks. it was apparently due to a problem that occurred when the reporting system crashed. now some want the people who benefited from that mistake to keep their money... 'you cant get blood out of a turnip and when somebodys been laid off and they dont have any resources, youre gonna have to go through procedures of garnishing wages and all that and it was really workforce developments fault. iowans came forward and pointed it out and said i want

state senator bill dotzler says the fight to get the money back will end up being more costly. he says money would be better spent finding the people who defraud the system intentionally and preventing another mistake. hell present his proposal to the board this friday. some iowans are asking governor branstad to reconsider their taxes this morning. i'm looking at...i have three kids and i've got a $16,000 in an additional tax bill that i wasn't expecting branstad's proposed 95-million dollar tax hike would hit farmers, teachers and small business owners the hardest. but he's reconsidering it now, because in his budget, he did not account for what's called coupling. that's when iowa lawmakers create state tax deductions that mirror the same deductions at the federal level. originally he said it wasn't possible to mirror those deductions, because

now, he thinks the state can do year. two high-profile metro crimes have been linked together... last month, police found 71-year and stabbed to death inside her home. the search for her killer ended yesterday, when police matched blood at the crime scene to ali yahia. yahia is the same man who was killed in a shoot-out with urbandale police earlier this month outside the holiday inn on merle hay road. they had been called there on a potential drug bust. police say the murder of mcneeley started as a random robbery. a clive hunter has cleared his name in court.. 'i think the verdict that was handed down today is a victory not only for my family and i but also for all the hunters in the state of iowa because i think its been a landmark decision.' joe franz was accused of poaching a deer on his own

back in november... the d-n-r said he used bait to lure his prize buck.... but franz claimed the mineral licks were from the land's previous owners, and he notified the dnr of it before hunting. friday, a judge decided to clear him of hunting over bait charges. that's the first time someone has won this type of case against the dnr. now republican lawmakers are looking at ways to avoid another situation like this, by making baiting laws less general. potholes are the cause of headaches for many drivers... but luckily, it is officially the metro... josh nguyen joins us now live to tell us how construction workers aren't the only ones who can help make our ride to work smoother.

waukee students will soon start their day a little differently... last night the school board decided to require all high school students to begin their day with the pledge of allegiance. the issue was brought up by a parent who questioned why the

09:03:34 he had , we know now, through the course of the homicide , had sustained a serious laceration to his hand. he went to the hospital with a fabricated story of a home invasion 45 police say the mcneeley's murder started as a random robbery. yahia's record shows a long history of theft.... he was charged with eight different robberies in 2014. the murder trial for a boone man accused of killing his wife is underway -- with opening statements beginning this morning. 41-year-old alexander fazzino is charged with first degree murder in the death of emily fazzino. emily's body was found on the bathroom floor of their boone home in 2012. fazzino was the one who called police on the day of the incident -- saying his wife was unresponsive. he told them he thought emily was trying to kill herself, and she was addicted to prescription medicine. but police investigated it as a

suffered head trauma. the high profile case has been moved to winneshiek county to avoid an impartial jury. it's expected to take up to three weeks. a piece of iowa history is at risk of being destroyed this morning... this was the scene yesterday at the wagon wheel bridge near logans port. tons and tons of ice flowing down the des moines river have actually bent the bridge in several places. authorities say they're now watching an ice jam in fort dodge... they say if it were to break loose, the bridge may succumb to the river completely. ice is also causing flooding in the ledges park area... the d-n-r says the jam there did break, causing water levels to recede some flooded out areas. but it wasn't enough to reopen a portion of 255th street... andy bartlett, dnr "it affects traffic coming through here. it's only about a half a mile closure bit it cuts it off, so you can't get through so you gotta make alternate plans on how you're gonna come to the park if you come

a new study shows fewer people are drinking milk. and now local farmers are feeling the effect... they say it's hurting the dairy industry - including producers right here in iowa. this dairy farm in

in the family for five generations. all 75 of their cows produce milk that goes to a facility in dubuque. but data from the u-s department of agriculture shows people are drinking less and less of it. farmers think its because there are so many other drink choices now. sot: 13 -- tom pasker / dairy farmer "probably the biggest thing would be the convienence of the soda pops, the gatorades, the sports drink type items have really taken on big. " with the decline, farmers say they've had to find other ways to store their milk -- such as in cheese and butter. they're also working on marketing campaigns, in hopes of

friday. republicans in nevada head out to vote today. today's republican caucus will be the republicans' first big vote in a state with a heavy latino population. the latest polls show donald trump with a 16 point lead over ted cruz. saturday, the democrats take their turn, in south carolina. the city of des moines is chipping in some big bucks to guarantee a new downtown hotel. last night the city council approved a 10 million dollar loan to help build the iowa events center hotel.... that's up from 5 million. before, board members were trying to use that for a foreign investment program that would fund the hotel... but they abandoned that due to timing issues. a new financing plan had the city pitching in 10 million... and they agreed. polk county has already approved 30 million dollars in funding. the hotel is set to open in early

johnston students are being asked to pay up this morning for a ride to school... last night school board members approved a new paid ridership program. it will require any student who lives within one mile of their school to pay for the bus trip. that's expected to expand to within two miles once the new high school opens. the charge will be around $460 dollars per year... board members say the change will help with the school's budget during this time of expansion. west des moines, ankeny, urbandale, and waukee already have pay to
